The IWT team, represented by Valerie Jenkinson presented Case Study findings for the REGEN wastewater treatment solution. The presentation entitled “Solar-powered wastewater treatment for the Caribbean” focused on recent case studies developed by the IWT team.

As Summary of the presentation as it relates to the worlds-first solar powered wastewater treatment solution with the Canadian Military in Gagetow, New Brunswick.

Presentation Overview

Island Water Technologies Inc. has developed the REGEN 20 – Self-Powered Wastewater Treatment System for decentralized wastewater treatment applications. This modular treatment technology leverages advances in fixed film and a renewable power management system to provide stand-alone, self-powered wastewater treatment. By combining this low-energy, high efficiency technology with a power management system integrating renewable power and energy storage, we’ve provided stand-alone treatment capability.

REGEN system installation

The system holds certain unique characteristics over conventional technology that include:

  • Self-powered operation
  • Very low aeration energetics (0.38-0.76 kWh/m3 wastewater treated)
  • No chemicals used
  • Rapid start-up, easily deployable

Self-powered on-site processing of wastewater provides a unique capability for distributed wastewater treatment, reduces costs and eliminates resources typically required to collect and haul wastewater from remote locations. The REGEN 20 self-powered wastewater treatment solution integrates technological advances that significantly reduce the cost and energetic input of the wastewater treatment process. Integrating renewable energy and advances in wastewater treatment with improvements in remote automation significantly reduces the inefficiencies in current wastewater treatment processes.

IWT has installed a REGEN 20 unit in Gagetown, NB for the Canadian Military. The unit was monitored over an 8-week period between June and July of 2017 for influent and effluent water quality by the Canadian Military. Feed wastewater to the unit was pumped a lift station connected to Gagetown’s municipal wastewater collection system. Rigorous testing of the unit was carried out which included (BOD, COD, Nitrogen, Phosphorous and TSS) was conducted daily. The hydraulic loading rate to the REGEN 20 was increased over a period from 3gpm – 4gpm. Treatment efficiency of the system was demonstrated to be consistent throughout this period.
